CLASS FAQs
What is the structure of classes at AFA? Is it primarily on-camera?
We like to mix it up! The format of class changes every week At least 50% of classes are on-camera, as we primarily focus on professional tv and film work at our studio. (Now in our post-covid world, with all but a few exceptions, all auditions are also on camera so we like to make sure we're all staying sharp and in the game with our camera technicals!) Sometimes you'll build a scene with a partner, sometimes you'll prepare a packet of sides for a series regular that is currently casting on your own, sometimes we'll set up a mock producer session and you'll perform live, sometimes you'll work on in-depth text analysis and scene study, sometimes you'll tackle a voiceover and commercial callback combo, sometimes you'll practice crying and diving into emotional scene work, sometimes you'll focus on network and genre sizes to stay fresh on your energy and grounded levels for what each show is expecting based on casting director feedback, etc!
What kind of scenes do you use for classwork?
It just depends on what the content is for that night and what the point of the material is! Sometimes it's lengthy and sometimes it's short, sometimes it's a live casting director Q&A night and there isn't even a scene! It's never the same, but it's always helpful.
Is there ever homework involved?
Yes! We try to make the homework optional and not use shame or guilt for the people who, quite frankly, absolutely don't have time. We structure it in a way that it only hurts you if you choose to not do the outside work, and you're not as prepared as others (example: for "reel footage night") This way you're not screwed over by a scene partner who you're counting on their attendance for your work to look great.
Do you repeat class lessons over time?
About once every two or three years we'll repeat the structure of a night if we think it's particularly helpful, but even then we provide a level up for actors who have been in our on-going classes for years to make sure they're still challenged with new examples, new scenes, and updated advice. A scene study night or an improv/comedy night is something we cycle around often, but the structure and content usually changes as well.
I'm new to acting/have been away from the industry for a bit. Where should I start?
We recommend new actors start with a One-on-one lesson before joining group class, so we can get you up to speed on our techniques and terminology to make sure you're super confident and prepared to jump in! You can book your one-on-one lesson from our Classes Page by scrolling down to the One-on-one Lesson section. We also offer Business Chats if you're looking for help navigating the business side of the industry, and our Essentials Series is a comprehensive self-guided course for anyone thinking of pursuing a career as an actor.
Can I audit a class before joining?
We don't allow audits in the traditional sense, but we do offer a one-time pop-in class for $70 where you fully participate in our lesson plan with everyone else! After your pop-in, if you decide to continue class with us, we will prorate your tuition for the rest of the month. If you're interested in setting up a pop-in class, please email us at [email protected] so we can make sure you get an appropriate introductory lesson. Please note, if you no-show or cancel less than two hours before a scheduled pop-in or introductory class, you will be required to sign up for a one-on-one lesson to catch up on what you missed before joining group classes.

What if I have to miss a class?
We know that you're busy being a rockstar. We get it. We're people too, and sometimes we get sick! Or go out of town! Have to run to Aunt Bertha's b-day party in Indiana? We understand. If you're going to be absent from a class and you know ahead of time, please shoot us an email at [email protected] and let us know! We spend a lot of time prepping material that is just right for you, so it helps us to know in advance if your plans have changed.
Can I use my cellphone in class?
We know, we know, we know, it’s your LIFELINE! However, all we ask is that during class, lectures, scene work, etc., PLEASE HAVE RESPECT FOR YOUR FELLOW ACTORS AND TEACHERS! We want EVERYONE PRESENT! We periodically take little breaks for individual work and you will have time to check your phone, we promise. If there’s an emergency, or if there’s a baby at home, we understand. Just let us know.
Appropriate Conduct
We believe every student has the right to learn and practice their craft in an open, non-threatening, creative environment free of misconduct, harassment, and discrimination. We have a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY. If any actor ever feels threatened, or has been harassed, stalked, mistreated, etc., please report it IMMEDIATELY. If a student is found to have behaved inappropriately, they will be asked to leave without an invitation to return. The whole purpose of this space is to have a safe place where we can learn and explore together.

- Adults: If you need to miss a class, you are welcome to hop in another adult intensive night that month to make up for your absence! Usually the content is the same Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, so if you can do your make-up during the same week as your missed class, that's your best option, however you're welcome to stack your classes and go multiple times during one week if that is more helpful to you. In order to be eligible for a makeup class, you must notify us of your absence via email at least two hours before your class is scheduled to start. Makeup spots are limited, not guaranteed for each class night and are subject to availability. Makeup classes don't carry over from month to month and must be booked during the same month as your missed class. If you are currently enrolled in our ongoing classes and you need to book a makeup class, you can do so here.
- Teens/Youth: If you miss a class, you can receive a free self-tape credit that you can use any time that same month! Free self tape credits do not carry over from month-to-month. If you don't often have self tape requests from representation, we recommend scheduling your self tape session anyway and using a scene from class for audition practice! Self-tape makeup credits are limited to ONE credit per month, even if you miss more than one class. To receive a makeup tape credit, you must notify us of your absence at least two hours before your class is scheduled to start.
